Eduard Thony

Eduard Thony (Austrian-German 1866-1950)

Austrian painter, draftsman and caricaturist; one of the most important staff members of the Munich satirical magazine Simplicissimus.  Eduard Thöny was born in Brixen in South Tyrol and studied at the Art Academy in Munich.  A professional draftsman and painter, he soon gained fame as caricaturist of the well-known magazine Simplicissimus, for which he would execute approximately 2,500 sheets.  In 1904, Thöny and his friends Ludwig Thoma and Rudolf Wilke made a Mediterranean trip with stopovers in Marseille, Algiers, Naples and Rome.

The works of the renowned art professor and honorary member of the Munich Art Academy are preserved, for instance, at the graphic collections in Munich and were already presented in solo exhibitions at the Kunstverein Munich and the Lehnbachhaus, when the artist was still alive.
